Frank, a fellow BCC volunteer from San Francisco, and I have become good friends. He has a lot experience in HIV/AIDS education amongst the deaf and enormous patience with helping those of us who are new to sign language. Perhaps best of all, Frank is happy to answer question after question about Deaf culture. For example, I once asked him how he, as a Deaf person, communicates in his dreams (sign laguage? talking?). A strange question, but the answer gave me a new understanding of the word “language.”
